About the Haileyburian
On September 23, 1904 Haileybury’s founder, Charles Cobbold Farr published the first edition of the Haileyburian, the town’s first newspaper. The paper carried political and general news. One of the prominent features in early issues was the mining news, as the mines of Cobalt were quickly becoming known as the richest in Canada.
The earliest editions of the Haileyburian are rare as the offices of the paper were destroyed by two separate Haileybury fires, first in 1906, and then the Great Fire of 1922.
The Haileyburian did not appear again until April 5 1923, and eventually was merged with the Temiskaming Speaker in 1962.
The Digitization Project
The digitization of the paper had been one of our goals for decades. We have a partial collection - about 400 issues - of the newspaper, kept in proper archival storage. However, they are not available to the public.
Years ago, digitization was unaffordable. As well, the scanning methods required rough handling of the original newspapers, some in a fragile state.
Happily, technology has improved and in 2024, with the assistance of The Temiskaming Foundation and The Rotary Club of Temiskaming Shores and Area, as well as private donation from our members, we achieved our goals.
